My Project

My students are a vibrant group of 2nd graders who walk into the room every day with endless curiosity and unique stories of their own. They are resilient, funny, and deeply empathetic. What I love most is their "lightbulb" moments—that split second when a challenging concept finally clicks or when they find a character in a book who feels like a long-lost friend. They come from diverse backgrounds and have a wide range of interests, from the mysteries of outer space to the reason Grogu is so powerful. They aren't just students; they are budding scientists, artists, and leaders who deserve a space that honors their potential.

Right now, our classroom library is a bit tired.

Many of our books are outdated or physically falling apart, which can unintentionally send the message that reading is a chore rather than a gift. By updating our collection with these specific titles, I am providing my students with:

Mirrors and Windows: These books will serve as "mirrors" where students see their own cultures and identities celebrated, and "windows" that allow them to peer into worlds different from their own. This builds the critical thinking and empathy necessary for global citizenship.

Reading Engagement: By adding high-interest graphic novels and contemporary fiction, I am meeting my reluctant readers where they are. When a student is excited to turn the page, their fluency, vocabulary, and stamina improve naturally.

A Culture of Literacy: New, beautiful books create an inviting environment. These resources will transform our reading nook into a "destination," encouraging students to take ownership of their learning and develop a lifelong habit of reading for pleasure.
