My Project

My gifted third, fourth, and fifth graders are curious, creative, and enthusiastic readers with wonderfully different interests. Some devour fantasy and mythology, others want mysteries they can solve, and some will choose a graphic novel every single time. One thing they have in common is that when they find a book or series they love, they want MORE! Many of the books in this project have been specifically requested by my students.

This project will help me put more of those high-interest books directly into their hands.

The Dog Man collection and Percy Jackson books and graphic novels will give students access to complete or expanded series instead of reaching the end of what we have on the shelf. Books from beloved series such as Amari, Middle School, and Mr. Lemoncello's Library will give readers more opportunities to continue with characters, authors, and stories that have already captured their attention.

Other books will help my students discover entirely new favorites. The National Park Mystery books combine mystery, problem-solving, and real-world settings, while books such as The Sherlock Society and Harriet the Spy appeal to students who love clues, investigation, and figuring things out. Willa of the Wood offers fantasy and adventure, while When Stars Are Scattered gives students an opportunity to encounter experiences and perspectives very different from their own. Even Vincent Can't Sleep connects literature with art, history, and the curiosity that drives so much of what we do in our gifted classroom.

For gifted learners, reading level is only one piece of finding the right book. They need variety, complexity, humor, adventure, interesting ideas, and choice. A well-stocked classroom library allows them to follow their curiosity wherever it leads and helps turn reading into something they choose to do rather than something they are simply assigned to do.
