When Life Gives You Lemons, Learn Financial Literacy

Help me give my students a financial literacy adventure with a point-of-sale ordering system and cash drawer.

Ms. Loyd Nemo Vista High School
Center Ridge, AR Grades 9-12

My Project

I love that my students are curious, creative, and eager to learn through hands-on experiences. They are especially engaged when they can connect classroom lessons to real-life situations. Many of my students are interested in culinary arts, customer service, business, and entrepreneurship, and this project will allow them to explore all of those areas while building important financial literacy skills.

Through our mobile lemonade stand, students will learn that running a business involves much more than making and selling a product.

They will practice planning a budget, calculating ingredient and supply costs, setting prices, tracking sales, and determining profit percentages. These lessons will help students understand how money moves through a business and how everyday decisions can affect financial success.

Students will use the system to enter customer orders, organize transactions, monitor sales, and review business reports. This resource will help them improve their accuracy, technology skills, and understanding of how businesses track income.

They will learn how to count cash, make correct change, organize denominations, and balance the drawer at the end of each sales event. These activities will strengthen their math skills while helping them become more confident and responsible when working with money.

Together, the point-of-sale system and cash drawer will transform our lemonade stand into a realistic learning environment. Students will be able to compare the cost of making each product with the amount earned from sales. They will calculate revenue, expenses, and profit percentages while learning the difference between money collected and actual profit.

These resources will help my students gain practical skills they can use in future jobs, business courses, and everyday life. Most importantly, they will learn that financial literacy can be exciting, meaningful, and empowering. My students will develop the confidence and knowledge needed to make responsible financial decisions in the future.
