My Project

My K-4th grade students enjoy teacher-directed art projects and student-centered (DIY) projects as well. During their DIY time, they pick from lots of materials/centers, and one of them is LEGO building. They have learned to work together, share the time and supplies, and enjoy each other's creations. We always clean up and sometimes display our sculptures for the next class to come in.

Several of my "Master Builders" have begun to make pictures, not typical, free-standing sculptures.

We've talked about what makes a good LEGO art piece and whether you are "even allowed" to simply make pictures. The discussion and creation have pushed our boundaries of what it takes to make art.

I recently visited a museum in Iowa in which there was a LEGO wall. I was impressed by the collaboration of the visitors. I noticed that some participants actually attempted to build large sculptures that stuck out and seemed to defy gravity.

I am planning to make a LEGO wall, and I am securing the wood and crown molding for the edge to make it resemble a frame. I need the base plates and LEGO pieces to complete this new art activity. I have middle school students who are also Master Builders, and they will be helping me to lay out the wall and paint the frame. When it is done, it will look like a piece of framed artwork. My hope is that every group can build on the LEGO wall picture, adding to it or reworking it as they see fit.
