My Project

As a special education teacher, I have the privilege of working with middle school-aged students who are full of potential and promise. However, many of these incredible young people face the harsh reality of food insecurity. Too often, they arrive at school feeling hungry because there isn’t enough food available at home. There are times when some of my students miss breakfast because they arrive late and must wait until lunchtime to eat. Approximately 83% of my students qualify for the free or reduced lunch program, yet the portion sizes are often inadequate for their growing bodies. As a result, several students ask for additional food beyond what the school offers.

The impact of not having enough food goes beyond physical hunger.

Students who struggle with food insecurity frequently experience feelings of anxiety, depression, and stress. Many face headaches, lack of energy, and challenges with concentration—factors that can significantly hinder their ability to learn and thrive in the classroom. It is important to meet these basic needs, as this support plays a crucial role in helping them manage their emotions and behaviors.

With your support for this project, I will be able to provide my students with nutritious snacks throughout the day, ensuring they have the energy and focus they need to succeed. Additionally, I will be able to supplement the school breakfast and lunch to guarantee that their meals are filling. By working together to combat food insecurity in my classroom, we can help remove hunger as an obstacle to their education and empower them to reach their full potential.
