Many of my students face food insecurity and arrive at school hungry, which makes it difficult for them to concentrate, participate, and feel fully present in the classroom. When basic needs go unmet, learning naturally becomes a secondary priority.\r\n\r\nHaving a closet stocked with nutritious snacks to supplement breakfast and/or lunch has truly transformed our classroom environment. What began as a simple resource quickly became a foundation for building trust, strengthening relationships, and fostering a stronger sense of community. The availability of food removed a significant barrier and allowed my students to show up as their best selves academically and emotionally. Students who were initially shy or embarrassed to ask for food gradually became more comfortable. As their basic needs were met consistently and respectfully, they began opening up, sharing more about their lives, and trusting that our classroom was a safe and supportive space. In fact, one student even asked if they could contribute food to the closet to help others, which spoke volumes about the sense of belonging and compassion that developed.\r\n\r\nThis school year has been truly wonderful for my students, and the positive changes we experienced would not have been possible without your generosity and support. Thank you for investing in our classroom and for making such a lasting and meaningful difference.","fullyFundedDate":1762097719589,"projectUrl":"project/hungry-for-more-2/9492822/","projectTitle":"Hungry for More 2","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. White","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6773861_orig.jpg?crop=1592,1592,x0,y573&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1630837627130","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6773861"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_34712","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":973,"numTeachers":93,"percentFrplEligible":83,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":64,"percentWhite":12,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":15,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"10.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":63.2,"schoolId":34712,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Oscar Smith Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Oscar Smith Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/virginia/chesapeake-public-schools/oscar-smith-middle-school/34712"}
