Protect Wildlife and Reduce Flooding with a Scholar-Built Rain Garden

Help me give my students the supplies needed to stabilize their newly built rain garden with rocks, protective fencing, and hoses so it can reduce flooding, support pollinators, and remain a lasting outdoor learning space.

My Project

Our scholars recently built a rain garden on campus from the ground up. They dug the garden bed, amended the soil, shaped a berm to slow and capture stormwater, and planted 25 native pollinator plants alongside community members during Expo Night. The garden is already off to a beautiful start and will help reduce flooding, filter runoff pollution, support pollinators, and improve the look and function of our campus. As we completed construction, however, some of our equipment broke, including a wheelbarrow, and we realized the berm needs rock stabilization along with a few key supplies to help us maintain and protect what scholars worked so hard to create.

With the right finishing materials, this rain garden can move from a great start to a long-term outdoor learning space.

Rock will stabilize the berm so stormwater stays where it should, fencing will protect the garden from foot traffic, and long hoses will allow scholars to establish the native plants successfully during their first growing season. Replacing broken tools like the wheelbarrow will also ensure scholars can continue maintaining the space safely and independently. The goal of this project is to help scholars take ownership of a living system they designed and built while learning how green infrastructure works in the real world.

My scholars stood in the soil they shaped and planted this garden themselves, working alongside each other and community members to create something that benefits both people and wildlife. They take pride in projects that improve their campus and address real environmental challenges like flooding and habitat loss. This rain garden reflects their effort, persistence, and commitment to making their school a better place, and these finishing touches will help ensure their work continues to grow and make an impact for years to come.
