Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Rainy days should not prevent my ASD students from learning, participating in their community, or safely transitioning between school and home. My students need umbrellas, raincoats, and rain boots to help them stay dry and comfortable during unexpected rain.

These supplies will be especially useful during dismissal time, when students may need to walk through the rain to buses, cars, or other transportation.

Having access to appropriate rain gear will help students remain comfortable and protected while making this important daily transition.

For my students, being prepared for different weather conditions is also an opportunity to build important independence and life skills. Students will learn to recognize when rain gear is needed, select the appropriate items, and practice putting on and taking off raincoats and boots.

The rain gear will also support our Community-Based Instruction (CBI). Learning does not only happen inside the classroom. Our students participate in activities in the community where they practice functional, social, and independent living skills. Rainy weather can make these experiences more challenging, but with umbrellas, raincoats, and rain boots, students will be better prepared to continue learning and participating.

Whether we are walking to transportation, participating in a community outing, or navigating a rainy school day, these materials will help remove a barrier that can limit our students' participation.
