My Project

The 5th and 6th-grade art club students are energetic, eager to take on real-world challenges, and love working with clay!

This school year, I want to empower these young artists to lead a meaningful project that connects our studio directly to the community through an Empty Bowls initiative—an international grassroots effort to fight hunger.

The project begins on the wheel. Our students are ready to transition from basic hand-building to more technical skills. Utilizing the VEVOR Pottery Wheels, they will learn the challenging art of throwing ceramic bowls. To ensure everyone can participate and create multiple pieces, we will also use FloraCraft Foam Balls as molds for quick, successful hand-building. Students will then add texture using OLYCRAFT Wood Stamps and Byllstore Clay Texture Rollers, finishing the bowls with vibrant Mayco Elements Glazes.

Once our beautiful bowls are fired, it's time to prepare for the Empty Bowls community event! To spread the word, students will create promotional flyers including a "call for artists" to gather additional bowl donations from local creators, as well as advertisements for the main event. At the gathering, guests will enjoy a simple meal of soup and bread. In exchange for a donation, they will choose one of the unique student-made ceramic bowls to take home—a lasting reminder of the empty bowls in our world and our own community. Best of all, every dollar raised will go directly to The Children's Hunger Project: Brevard County's Backpack Program.
