This was my first time writing a grant for classroom supplies as I am used to purchasing items myself. I was overwhelmed with emotions when I was informed you had funded my grant and so quickly as well!\r\nWith the supplies, I began creating learning kits focused around social-emotional skills. The first unit created was for A Little Scribble Spot, A Story About Colorful Emotions. This is the first book in the series you provided us with this grant. So many of our students have a difficult time recognizing emotions, feeling the physical reactions in their body as they experience their emotions, and finally managing their reactions to the emotions they are experiencing. This book takes the children through different emotions and links each emotion to a color (green for relaxed and calm, blue for sadness or loneliness, yellow for cheerful or ecstatic, gray for nervousness or doubt, orange for courage and bravery, red for impatient or mad, and pink for friendship, love, appreciation. Scribble Spot, the character colored with all the colors, helps the children understand that each of us has all of these emotions inside of us that are expressed at different times. Each child created their own scribble spots to take home and the theme was shared with the families.\r\nOnce the emotions and colors were introduced, we were able to begin focusing on each emotion specifically through the other books in the series (spot of anger, confidence, happiness, peaceful, sadness, anxiety, safety, respectful, responsibility, kindness, patience, organization, and honesty). In the example shown in my pictures of A Spot of Love, I created printed pictures of examples presented in the book to show ways to show love. The children can choose pictures that represent activities they like to do when they are experiencing feelings of friendship, kindness, respect, appreciation, and love. Similar visuals were created for other books in the series. The hands on materials allowed the children to be a part of the lesson and make connections to the emotions being explored.\r\nI am then able to refer to these emotions and/or lead the children to describe how characters are feeling in stories such as the Howard B. Wigglebottom series you purchased for me as well (Learn's It's OK to Back Away, Learns We Can All Get Along, Learns About Sportsmanship, Listens to His Heart). It is exciting to see the children start to make connections independently as the stories are read. We can then explore the reasons why characters feel that way and text-to-self connections (\"Have you ever had someone take your toy?\" \"How did it make you feel?\"). This then leads us into social-emotional problem solving and self-regulation activities. If children can recognize when they begin to feel angry, for example, they can work through choosing activities to help them calm and self-regulate.\r\nSo, with your gift of these materials, I am able to guide my students through understanding emotions, exploring how your body feels when you are experiencing certain emotions, and using self-regulation techniques when needed. These are the skills needed for my students to be able to be successful learners as they enter Kindergarten and beyond.\r\nBeing able to create durable materials, in color, that are laminated and organized will be incredibly helpful in the future. Although it is time consuming to create the materials now, they will be used for years to come.
