My Project

My name is Ms. Mason, and I am an occupational therapist working at Aveyron Academy, a District 75 (D75) high school in Brooklyn, New York. The students in this population present with a wide array of developmental challenges and have a diverse range of unique needs. Additionally, the majority of my students come from a low-income household.

Because my students navigate the world with varied communication styles and physical and cognitive abilities, standard classroom setups can sometimes feel overwhelming or under-stimulating.

Despite these daily hurdles, they arrive eager to learn, connect, and grow. They thrive when given hands on, therapeutic resources that respect their individual learning styles and sensory profiles.

This sensory room will directly impact my students by addressing their core needs in the following ways:

• Self-Regulation and De-escalation: For my students, the sensory room will provide a safe, soothing environment to decompress when experiencing sensory overload. Calm lighting and cozy seating will help lower anxiety and bring their nervous systems back to a state of calm.

• Proprioceptive and Vestibular Input: Items like a swing, weighted blankets, sensory mats, and gross motor equipment will help students who actively seek sensory input. This physical engagement allows them to feel where their bodies are in space, reducing restlessness and impulsive movements.

• Increased Focus and Engagement: By spending dedicated time in a structured sensory environment, our students can improve their body awareness, core strength, and motor planning.

When our students are given the space to properly regulate their sensory systems, they return to their classrooms more focused, happier, and fully ready to engage in academic and social activities. Your generous donation will directly provide these historically underfunded classrooms with the specialized tools necessary to make a huge difference in their day-to-day functioning. Thank you for supporting our diverse learners!
