Being able to easily erase and refine their work gave them the confidence to take risks and experiment with different strategies.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, my students were ecstatic! Their eyes lit up, and they immediately asked, \"Are these really for us?\" Having shiny new tools instantly boosted their excitement for math and made them feel deeply valued.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, students will use both the desk and standing whiteboards to lead peer presentations and explain their mathematical reasoning during our current unit. The graphic novel format makes complex topics more approachable, especially for students who might be intimidated by traditional nonfiction books. Through engaging illustrations and storytelling, students are building background knowledge, expanding their vocabulary, making connections to our classroom lessons, and discovering that learning about history and science can be just as entertaining as reading fiction.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite parts of our school day is our Free Exploration time, when students have the freedom to investigate topics that genuinely interest them. These new books have been a fantastic addition to those opportunities! I love watching students browse the shelves, settle in with a book, and share fascinating discoveries with their classmates. It's especially rewarding to see students who don't always choose to read independently become interested in a topic because a colorful comic catches their attention. It created such a positive and memorable experience for everyone.\r\n\r\nThis special celebration was more than just snow cones, it was a way to recognize the effort, perseverance, and accomplishments our students showed all year long. Many students reflected on how much they grew as readers and writers this year, and being able to celebrate together helped make those accomplishments feel even more meaningful.\r\n\r\nThe students' reactions when they first saw the machine were priceless. There were cheers, huge smiles, and lots of excitement about getting to use something brand new in our classroom. One box after another kept showing up at our door until all eight tubs were here. They just couldn't wait to get started.\r\n\r\nThe first tub we used was called Properties of Earth, and we used it to enrich our geology unit. We classified rocks and minerals according to color, streak, texture, luster, and hardness. They loved getting their hands on the actual rocks and minerals and doing the tests themselves, especially testing the hardness by attempting to scratch the specimens with different materials and assigning each one a number on the Mohs Scale of Hardness. Having access to social‑emotional books helps students see that many emotions are okay and introduces simple coping skills to calm down so they can return to the next responsibility with better focus.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom we offer a variety of resources for students to use beyond the direct lesson. Whether they choose a board game to practice short vowels, read words to match dominos, or pick an item to identify beginning, middle, and ending sounds, these activities build confidence and increase engagement. Students are frequently challenged at their individual level both independently and in small groups, which supports steady growth.\r\n\r\nThe students, teachers, and parents have all been proud of how much academic knowledge has grown so far this year.
