My classroom is unique in my middle school building of 5th through 8th grade students. My students stay with me for all core subjects instead of switching classes. Having alternative seating for all students really helps them feel comfortable and get through the time. \r\n\r\nI also have several students with ADD or ADHD. Two of my students are going through a divorce in their family right now. They were moving and times are hard. It means so much to me and them to have some extra snacks at school. I can provide them with a quick current events video and snack to help everyone regulate and get through the afternoon. \r\n\r\n\r\nMany of these students have sports and clubs after school until 5pm. 7 am to 5pm is a long day for kids. Many of my students come to school early in the morning and are at school playing sports until 5pm. It's a long day for growing kids! Also, having a snack at school helps many students know that they are cared for and helps them to have a positive image of school. Students are allowed but not always able to bring a snack to school. And, let's face it, sometimes they are just growing and extra hungry! Growing preteens need to fuel their brains. Having a snack available in the afternoon helps students to get through the afternoon. Many students are on free and reduced lunch and not able to have their own snacks, often when students forget their snack at home. I am able to give them one. \r\n\r\nI have found students are able to not have an afternoon drop in effort when they arw given a quick break and snack in the afternoon. During this time, we also watch a 10 monitor current events video for students. At first, the students rotated the seats to see which students liked having a ball chair. Now, most days, the same students use them and they really work. \r\n\r\nThe students using the chairs that allow the wiggle room are able to much better concentrate on their work and focus. They spend more time focusing in class on class discussions and participate without disruptions or fidgeting. Some students were sometimes moving so much, they would fall off or backwards in their chairs. This is no longer an issue.
