For this particular unit, we watched videos of firsthand accounts and read two of the selections from \"The Good Immigrant\" (\"How to Write Iranian-American, or The Last Essay\" by Porochista Khakpour and \"Dispatches from the Language Wars\" by Daniel Jose Older). Introducing common struggles that first generation Americans face every day has been eye-opening for my small town, low diversity students. They made poignant observations about classmates whose first language is not English, especially regarding the difficulties those students face in trying to \"fit in\" while retaining a valuable piece of their culture and identity. \r\nThis is the first unit, and I am already seeing the impact that the experience of taking this class is going to make on them.\r\nThank you so much for your generosity.
