We've introduced lessons on identifying authors' purpose, analyzing character development, and recognizing different literary devices. Because many of the new texts are rich in culture and diversity, students are also learning to make text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world connections more effectively. This allows them to see themselves, their friends, and their families reflected in the stories, making the reading experience more personal and meaningful. As a result, reading in our classroom has become a dynamic and collaborative activity. We use the new books for whole-group read-alouds, small group discussions, and independent reading time. Students are often eager to share their insights and perspectives, debating character motivations or pointing out similarities between the stories they're reading and their own lives.\r\n\r\nThis newfound excitement is especially evident with students who are particularly enjoying the picture books and graphic novels. For many, these formats feel less intimidating than traditional chapter books, providing a gateway to a love of reading. The visual storytelling in graphic novels, for instance, has captivated students who may have struggled with decoding long passages of text. They're able to follow the plot through the illustrations, building confidence and comprehension skills as they go. Similarly, the powerful images and concise text in the picture books have sparked a sense of wonder and curiosity in our younger readers. Watching them get lost in a story, pointing out details in the illustrations, and retelling the plot in their own words is a clear sign of the positive impact these new books have had.","fullyFundedDate":1744299290590,"projectUrl":"project/book-bonanza/9239511/","projectTitle":"Book Bonanza!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Erickson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5685284_orig.jpg?crop=1196,1196,x0,y31&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1701115108014","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5685284"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_38661","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1262,"numTeachers":101,"percentFrplEligible":67,"percentAsian":9,"percentBlack":14,"percentWhite":59,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":9,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"12.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":78.6,"schoolId":38661,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Oshkosh North High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Oshkosh North High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/wisconsin/oshkosh-area-school-district/oshkosh-north-high-school/38661"}
