I have been cooking with students for several years. For quite a while I paid for the events. That led to Ms. Henderson's Pop Up. It became a way to pay for the food which was costing more and more each time. What I didn't realize was how much turning cooking into a fundraiser, which was primarily a personal fiscal decision; would lead to many more lessons around money and work readiness.\r\n\r\nThe first thing we worked on was considering what we would make based on food costs. Over the last year we did nachos, loaded baked potatoes, a turkey dinner, vegetarian chili, air fried chicken wings and Christmas cookies. Each time the students were involved in the choices from the grocery store based on price per ounce. They were part of the choice when we had to switch away from hamburger based meals or raising our price when hamburger got too high. They learned about food safety and soft skills around being in a workplace.
