We work on understanding theme, making inferences, building vocabulary, analyzing characters and conflicts, and supporting ideas with evidence from the text. Just as importantly, students are making connections between the stories and their own lives, which leads to great conversations about identity, relationships, choices, perseverance, and overcoming challenges.\r\nReading in our classroom looks different from day to day. Students read independently, listen to books being read aloud, read with partners, and talk about what they are reading with classmates. The reading competition adds extra excitement because students have goals to work toward and prizes to earn. For many of our students, especially those who have struggled with school or previously thought they weren't \"readers,\" having a choice of books and the chance to earn a prize gives them the motivation to pick up a book and get started.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part is seeing reluctant readers become genuinely interested in books. Students are recommending books to one another, celebrating when classmates finish a book, and challenging themselves to reach the next reading goal. Some students who once avoided reading are now eager to find out what happens next in a story. Every book they finish builds their confidence and reminds them that they are capable readers. The books and the competition are helping us create a classroom where reading is not just an assignment—it is something students can enjoy, share, and feel proud of.","fullyFundedDate":1765214583968,"projectUrl":"project/literature-for-growth-and-resilience/9786544/","projectTitle":"Literature for Growth and Resilience","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Vetter","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9486211"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_99691","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":24,"numTeachers":7,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":63,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":36,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":0,"gradesServed":"6 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"3.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":40.0,"schoolId":99691,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Lad Lake Synergy School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Lad Lake Synergy School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/wisconsin/milwaukee-public-schools/lad-lake-synergy-south/99691"}
