With more than 150 band students and another 200 general music students, we have a lot of sheet music, photocopies, lesson materials, pencils, instruments, and supplies to keep track of. Students are now able to quickly find what they need and return materials to their designated spaces without disrupting rehearsal or class. The colorful, organized drawers have also helped create predictable routines, and students were excited to see how much more organized and colorful our music room could be!\r\n\r\nThese drawers are helping my students become more independent and responsible musicians. Instead of spending valuable instructional time searching for materials, we can focus on making music! Students are learning to prepare themselves for class, locate their lesson books and supplies, and take ownership of keeping our shared music space organized. When the new materials were introduced, students were excited to explore the different options and quickly learned that these tools are available to help them feel comfortable and successful. For students who may become overwhelmed by the sounds, movement, and excitement of music class, having an appropriate sensory support gives them another way to regulate while remaining an active part of our classroom community.\r\n\r\nAs we continue through the school year, these tools will help students build independence and develop strategies they can use to manage their emotions, attention, and sensory needs. Our goal is for every student to feel safe, valued, and confident enough to sing, dance, play, listen, and collaborate with their classmates.
