Our high school is very large and full of diverse learners. By financing alternative lighting, my students are able to have a space with less intense overhead lighting. This sensory aspect makes a big positive difference in the atmosphere of the classroom and also helps my students who are neurodivergent, especially those on the Autism Spectrum. \r\n\r\nAnother positive change is the variety of fidgets and manipulatives that allow students to have a kinetic way to move their bodies even when they must stay seated. This especially helps when students are listening to media or a lesson. \r\n\r\nThe other mental health resources have also added to students' wellness in my classroom. The one that stands out most surprised me: the sequin poster that allows students to use their finger to turn the multi-colored sequins to silver and back again. They often stand together and chat while creating designs or they will leave some art for the next class. At the end of the unit, students eventually articulate the allegorical parallels between the novel and a historical, political, psychological, or religious synopsis of sorts. \r\n\r\nHowever, before they can jump into something as complex as understanding a novel on an allegorical level, we use children's book (such as these!) to collaboratively model allegorical parallels in a low-stakes manner. Many of my students face challenges outside of school that can make it difficult for them to focus on learning. By having access to essential personal care products, they feel more confident and prepared to engage in their education. The impact of these items goes beyond just physical well-being—they also contribute to their self-esteem and overall comfort, creating a more positive learning environment for everyone.\r\n\r\nThe generosity of donors has allowed me to create a small but meaningful support system within my classroom. When students know they can discreetly access hygiene items when needed, it removes a major barrier to their participation and social interactions. Instead of worrying about personal concerns, they can focus on their studies and personal growth. This simple act of kindness has helped foster a sense of dignity and care, letting students know that their needs matter and that they are supported.\r\n\r\nI am incredibly grateful to DonorsChoose.org and the generous individuals who made this possible. Your support has not only provided necessary items but has also reinforced a culture of compassion and understanding in my classroom. When we received the packages, I had my students help open them to see all of the tools now available to them throughout the day. \r\n\r\nI do not have a classroom but rather utilize a number of classrooms throughout the school. In each of these classrooms, I have a basket including sensory tools, fidgets, and snacks. The students who recognize they need some help with focusing or fidgeting are able to manage themselves by going over and taking what they need for the hour. Students who are not recognizing they are needing a sensory tool are given tools by myself or the other teacher in the room discreetly. It is wonderful to have these tools at hand when they are needed. It is amazing to see students start to recognize when they are starting to become frustrated and need something to keep them focused or their hands busy. \r\n\r\nThe games have been used as a brain break during our pirate times. Pirate time is a time designated on Wednesdays and Thursdays for students to choose what they need, for example study hall time, extra help in a subject, or a break from academics. A group of students sign up with me every week to play games. This is a great way for them to take a break from academic subjects, communicate with others, and use their brains in other ways. These students look forward to this time every week.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your gracious donation as it is helping students remain calm, practice regulation, identify escalating emotions, and use their brains in a different way.","fullyFundedDate":1730001051424,"projectUrl":"project/sensory-tools-and-brain-breaks/8901890/","projectTitle":"Sensory Tools and Brain Breaks","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Rentmeester","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9815291"},{"teacherId":9798159,"projectId":8935642,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for the light covers for my classroom. I have always wanted to start a class library in the target language for our students and because of you it has been made possible. While many students complain about reading, it has proven to be a fantastic way to use the target language more and I think the students are starting to see a glimpse of that. \r\n\r\nThey are recognizing more vocabulary, they are using words and phrases that they've learned from their books, and they are realizing how much of the Spanish language they actually do know and understand. Through the use of these materials, students are finally seeing how much their effort has contributed to their acquisition of Spanish. \r\n\r\nStudents are able to select any book they would like from the library. We read for 10 minutes on Wednesday and Friday. The only rule that the students have to follow is that when we do 10 minutes of free reading, they are unable to do anything else. They have to save their homework questions and take notes on any words/phrases they don't understand until the time limit has ended. We are finally starting to see the benefits of this reading time and we have you all to thank for that.
