One of our favorite moments was using the Picasso Tiles to build 3D buildings and houses. Scholars designed their own buildings and houses using different shapes, heights, and widths, giving them an opportunity to see how geometric shapes can come together to create the foundation of a structure. After building their buildings and houses, scholars unfolded the shapes and used the nets to determine the surface area of their buildings and houses. What started as a creative building activity became an authentic opportunity to apply geometry and problem-solving skills.\r\n\r\n When scholars first saw the new materials, their excitement was immediate. Their first question was, \"When can we use them?\" They were eager to explore the materials and find out how they could become part of our learning. Seeing that excitement reinforced how valuable hands-on resources are in helping scholars become engaged and curious mathematicians.\r\n\r\n We have also begun using the counting bears in intentional ways to support our math learning. Scholars sorted the bears by color and height and then used their groups to explore ratios and equivalent ratios. Moving forward, our next step is to intentionally plan these resources into upcoming lessons so that they are not simply additional materials, but purposeful tools that help scholars make connections between abstract mathematical concepts and what they can see, touch, build, and explore. These resources will continue to give our scholars opportunities to be creative, collaborate with one another, and develop a deeper understanding of mathematics.","fullyFundedDate":1763595575743,"projectUrl":"project/math-mind-and-heart-creating-a-calm-a/9587296/","projectTitle":"Math, Mind, and Heart: Creating a Calm and Curious Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Lindvold","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9706160_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1755671353067","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9706160"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_126149","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":167,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":38,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":8,"percentWhite":55,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":18,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":11,"gradesServed":"K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"UNCLASSIFIED","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":80.0,"schoolId":126149,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Catalyst Public Schools - Bremerton on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Catalyst Public Schools - Bremerton","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/washington/washington-department-of-education/catalyst-public-schools-bremerton/126149"}
