The novel opens strong discussions about identity, courage, integrity, and standing up for what is right—even when it's uncomfortable. \r\n\r\nWhat reading looks like in our classroom\r\nStudents read independently, in pairs, and through guided whole-class discussions. We stop often to reflect, annotate, and talk about big ideas, character choices, and real-world connections. Because every student now has a book in good condition, there is a sense of pride and responsibility—students are more invested, more focused, and more willing to participate.\r\n\r\nStudents who are especially enjoying the book include those who connect strongly to stories about perseverance and finding your voice. A few students who don't always see themselves as \"strong readers\" have become deeply engaged, often asking to share their thoughts during discussions. Some students are drawn to the sports element of the story, while others relate to the main character's experience of feeling misunderstood or underestimated. These games also gave our students an opportunity to challenge themselves in a new way, push themselves out of their comfort zones, and continue to explore how they can identify with health and fitness in different ways. So many young students don't feel connected to sports and don't feel like PE is for them. When this project showed them that there are so many more fitness activities they have yet to explore, they really opened up their minds to new ways of taking care of themselves. Not only have these additions been fun and engaging for our students and their reading journeys, but the materials from this project are the only reason our library has continued to function this year.
