It is such an important story for our children to learn. We have lots of non-fiction books about the Statue of Liberty, immigration, and Ellis Island. But we don't have good stories about children and what it was like for them.\r\n\r\nIn the book, when Jesse came across the sea, my third graders get to read a story about a young girl who traveled on her own. Jesse had to immigrate to America, she had to come across the Atlantic Ocean on a steam ship on her own, and go through Ellis Island. The story is one that my third graders completely engage with. The illustrations are beautiful and amazing.\r\n\r\nI am so thankful that I am able to give my students the experience an opportunity of reading this story in each of them holding the book. In our school district, elementary students do not have access to microscopes. I find that my third graders are so curious and I knew having a microscope in our classroom would make a huge impact.\r\n\r\nThe morning that I brought the microscope into our classroom things were all a buzz. I have made a little center where the microscope is at now. The first day we got into pears and looked at different things as one of our rotations. It was the most popular center and students wanted to look at more and more and more things. I now have it in a spot where students can come in any morning with things that they have found that they want to look at under the microscope. We have a time of our day where that person who brought something in gets to look at it and focus it first. Then all of the other students can come through and take a peek.
