These have helped grow my students' confidence in math, their skills, and their engagement. They were all so excited when all the new fact \"toys\" arrived and couldn't wait to start practicing! Just today I asked all the students what their favorite parts of getting these materials was.\r\n\r\nOne of the biggest hits was the POP IT multiplication and division table. Students used the tactile silicone multiplication table to memorize their facts and pop to check their answers. Many of them loved it so much that they had their parents buy one for home, too!\r\n\r\nThe various flashcards were super helpful. Students were able to check their understanding of facts independently. They were also helpful to have on hand when IAs came and worked with students 1 on 1.\r\n\r\nMy students loved the fidget spinners. One girl stated that she likes to spin it for a random equation but you have to be quick, so she learned to answer the questions faster, and then she liked turning over the spinner to make sure she was correct. \r\n\r\nA couple of kids shared how much they enjoyed the Splash! games. One girl said it is more fun to practice their math facts because there's a risk of getting a splash card. Another student said that they really like how competitive it can be when they practice their facts against a friend or two.\r\n\r\nAt the beginning of the year, most of my 3rd graders did not know multiplication facts. Now, they can solve most facts in 3 seconds or less. I even have a handful of 2nd graders that have independently explored multiplication with these new tools and now they know their facts, too! I had 60 4th and 5th grade students join the competition this year, so the books will be put to good use! Students recently received the books and are starting to read them -- they are excited about the books and already making plans for the ones they will read next. \r\n\r\nAs they read the books (sometimes multiple times), students become experts on the characters, settings and stories. When we begin the competitions in February, students will rely on their close reading and acquired knowledge of these books to answer detailed questions -- it's quite remarkable what they can recall!\r\n\r\nIn a world where kids' attention is being pulled in various directions, it makes my librarian heart happy to see so much excitement around books and reading.
