These texts helped students understand that reading isn't just for stories—it's also a way to learn real information. The books were especially effective because they were written at accessible reading levels, allowing students to engage with the content more independently and confidently. The bright, colorful pictures also supported comprehension and kept students engaged as they read, especially as they explored fun animals and interesting topics.\r\nNonfiction books also supported students in building content knowledge on animals, while developing important academic vocabulary.\r\nTo connect reading and writing, students created their own \"All About\" books. They practiced writing informational sentences, adding labels, and sharing facts about a topic they chose—just like the nonfiction books we studied.\r\nThese books helped students grow as readers, writers, and thinkers while building curiosity about the world around them.\r\nReading time in our classroom is active, engaging, and student-centered. You might see students gathered on the carpet for a read-aloud, where we model how to think about a text by asking questions, making predictions, and discussing ideas together. You'll also see small groups working with targeted instruction, where students practice specific skills like decoding, fluency, and comprehension at their level.\r\nDuring independent and buddy reading, students choose books that interest them—many are excited to explore nonfiction topics, especially animals—and practice reading on their own or with a partner. The accessible reading levels and bright, colorful pictures in our classroom library.\r\nYou'll hear students talking about books, sharing what they've learned, and using vocabulary from the texts. .\r\nReading in our classroom is a mix of skill-building, curiosity, and joy—helping students grow into confident, thoughtful readers. Many students in our classroom are especially excited about the new books—so much so that they often \"compete\" to be the first to read them! The high-interest topics, especially the fun animal books, along with the bright, colorful pictures, have made these texts incredibly engaging.\r\nStudents who are still building confidence as readers are eager to pick them up because the accessible reading levels help them feel successful. More confident readers are also drawn in by the interesting facts and enjoy sharing what they've learned with classmates.\r\nIt's been wonderful to see students so motivated and enthusiastic about reading—these books have quickly become some of the most popular choices in our classroom library.\r\nIf I had to highlight a couple of students, Mikaeel and Maddox have been especially eager, grateful, and excited about the new books. They choose to read them independently and together every day, often revisiting their favorites and sharing what they've learned with each other.","fullyFundedDate":1774726984463,"projectUrl":"project/little-writers-big-learning-animal-res/10172442/","projectTitle":"Little Writers, Big Learning: Animal Research Books","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Donnerberg","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/2212538"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_130221","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":443,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":52,"percentAsian":6,"percentBlack":4,"percentWhite":56,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":18,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":100.0,"schoolId":130221,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Emerald Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Emerald Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/washington/evergreen-school-district-114/emerald-elementary-school/130221"}
