The holidays are upon us and end of year activities are upon us. Historically, this has been a time where students veg out and play video games, but because of YOU, we can make it something MORE! \r\n\r\nThey will receive \"CARE\" packages right before our next break, which will include STEM projects. They are most excited about this because it is something specifically for them. I will talk about College and being on their own, and how getting care packages might remind them of home, make them feel seen, and show them support. It also gives them something to do OTHER than video games and social media. They saw the STEM boxes and are so excited to get them. I am still trying to game a plan for those that might not have STEM support at home. (i will do practice session during lunch recess for those who want it.)\r\n\r\nWe have used the flash cards to do interactive activities that focus on timelines, legacy and time periods (what was happening at the time). We will be doing astronomy soon - but just seeing activities with people depicted that look like them is amazing. It makes them feel good and builds confidence for the work that is required. \r\n\r\nThank you so much for inspiring our kids to work hard, to actually \"like\" school, and be excited for their future! happy Holidays, may you and yours be blessed.","fullyFundedDate":1757542444517,"projectUrl":"project/school-breaks-can-still-be-a-vibrant-op/9683389/","projectTitle":"School Breaks Can Still Be a Vibrant Opportunity to Learn","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Gladney","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5362648"},{"teacherId":621846,"projectId":9431304,"letterContent":"The sensory table is such an enhancement to our classroom. As anticipated, so many skills are being learned and practiced with this new material. \r\n\r\nIn our Inclusion classroom, one of the most important components is Universal Design of Instruction. That means that lessons are planned with an entry point and participation opportunity for every student in the classroom no matter their abilities. The sensory table is the magical material that offers just that. Just today, 9, yes, 9 children chose to come play at the sensory table at once. As they squeezed in for space around the tub, they picked up containers to pour water into, using measuring cups, pint glasses, quarts containers, etc. So for the youngest developmentally, they enter for the sensory experience, for the curiosity of pouring. For the cognitively older, they are counting how many scoops of a certain cup fill a container. They are comparing the size of containers. This is the beauty of your gift. Thank you. \r\n\r\nThe sensory table has also offered a wonderful opportunity to practice our turn taking skills. Instead of grabbing, children have learned to use an \"asking hand\" for a turn. It's remarkable how much more someone is willing to give a turn if asked nicely. They have also been using the sand timer to take turns. \"I'll have it first for one minute, then you.\" Yes! Preschoolers are using these remarkable skills at the sensory table that YOU helped to purchase. \r\n\r\nGratitude seems too small a word for your donation. The art supplies immediately inspired them to dive into drawing, painting, and storytelling projects. For example, we recently started a writing unit where students are creating their own \"mini books.\" The Astrobrights paper and laminating pouches have allowed them to design vibrant covers, while the Crayola markers and acrylic paint pens give their illustrations professional flair. Students are beaming with pride as they see their published work come to life!\r\n\r\nThe sensory items, like the moldable sand and weighted sloth plush, have also been an amazing addition. They've given students new ways to self-regulate so they can return to their learning calm and focused. Because of your support, we were able to purchase new technology and supplies that are already having a meaningful impact on student learning.\r\n\r\nThe Logitech headsets have been a huge game-changer. In our classroom, students use them for independent reading programs, online lessons, and small group work. The noise-cancelling feature allows them to focus on what they're learning without being distracted by the busy classroom around them. For some of our more easily distracted learners, this has provided the quiet focus they need to stay engaged.\r\n\r\nStudents were especially excited about the flexible chair bands. These bands give students with extra energy an appropriate outlet to fidget while still staying attentive during lessons. Many were eager to try them right away, and they've already made whole-class activities smoother and more focused.\r\n\r\nOne of the most touching moments has been watching students who typically struggle with focus warm up to the new technology. For example, a few have begun eagerly putting on headsets as soon as it's time for reading, signaling that they're ready to dive in without reminders. It has given them a sense of independence and confidence in their learning.\r\n\r\nThe additional supplies, such as ink for our printer, wooden clips for displaying student work, and even the smoothie cups for special classroom celebrations, have all made our learning space more functional, colorful, and fun. The weighted stuffed animal has quickly become a favorite for students who need a calming presence during learning time, helping them stay grounded and focused.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting ways we've put these materials to use is during our independent reading and writing workshop. With the flexible seating pillows, students can choose the spot where they feel most comfortable, which has boosted both focus and stamina. Your support has made a meaningful difference, and we are already seeing the impact of these new resources in our daily work.\r\n\r\nSince receiving the materials, we've been able to incorporate them into a variety of classroom projects. For example, we used the *EXPO Low-Odor Dry Erase Markers* for a group activity where students worked in pairs to create visual presentations on different science topics. They were so excited to use the bright colors to make their work pop on the whiteboard, and it was incredible to see how engaged they were. The *DYMO LetraTag® Bluetooth® Label Maker* has already become a favorite in the classroom as well, with students using it to create personalized labels for their supplies, helping them stay organized and take ownership of their learning environment.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, my students' reactions were priceless. The room was filled with gasps and cheers as we unpacked the items. One student exclaimed, \"This is better than a Christmas gift!\" as they eagerly picked up the *Fuller Brush Electrostatic Carpet & Floor Sweeper* and tried it out, seeing how easily it cleaned up crumbs from their desk areas. It was a moment that made me realize just how much small things like this can make a difference in creating a positive, functional classroom environment.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we are planning an art and design project where students will use the *Craftzilla Colored Masking Tape* to create vibrant and creative posters around classroom themes. They're excited to experiment with the different colors and get creative with their designs. I'm also working on incorporating the *Oxford Wave Binders* into our upcoming research project, where students will organize their findings and present them in a professional binder. LOL. There have been a lot of studies about NOT giving snacks as \"rewards\" as it promotes eating and obesity. I have other small prizes like bouncy balls, but i will tell you these students appreciate and will work hard for a good snack. I know myself, a meeting WITH snacks ALWAYS goes better than one without.... \r\n\r\nWe have learned how to RATION snacks. They found out really quickly if we all had a snack anytime we wanted, we would literally run out in a matter of weeks. Yes, we did the math and calculations! think about it 20 students x 5 days a week + study groups 10 x 4 days a week, that alone comes to 140 snacks a week!!!! \r\n\r\nThey definitely believe in snacks on testing days, or when we are doing special projects, writing or anything that is \"hard\" - they call it BRAIN food. They said when they have their brain food, they work harder and that in turn builds BIG BRAINS. (someone actually uses that as their 'nickname'.\r\n\r\nWe will also be having an amazing end of year celebration with their choice of beverage and favorite snacks. They do not know it yet, but they will get a summer bag with the \"treats\" (that are not as healthy) for their hard work. We also had our RAMEN party, which was a BIG hit! we added our own extras, hot sauce and \"kicked it up\" a notch. (interesting to say the least.......)\r\n\r\nAll of this has helped build community, comradery, and support. They have learned to share, be responsible for cleaning up after themselves, hygiene and maintain sanitary conditions. It is just what we needed to end the year with JOY. This can usually be a very hard time as most classes are taking academic exams and are very anxious. This would be the BEST year i have experienced with testing as most of the students were prepared and confident. \r\n\r\nOur test success was in part due to the previous funding and support from Donors choose. Study labs, promoting academic excellence (rewards) and talking thru \"best practices\" has really helped. Our students now take testing seriously and understand the value. They are proud of their work and it shows.\r\n\r\nSo when students are done with testing we have been doing these DIY projects for fun. Just in time for Mother's and Father's day, it was EXTRA appreciated as they had some cool gifts to take home and share. \r\n\r\nThe most \"exciting\" thing was the slime as they got to do all sorts of colors, scents, glowing, etc. The most \"valuable\" to me was the vacuum as it is SUPER hard to keep the room clean and tidy, but this helps them be responsible and clean after themselves. The most \"surprising\" was the pencil sharpener, so many kids want SUPER SHARP pencils!!!! even other classes come by to use it, saying it gets it super sharp and clean. lol - who knew??????\r\n\r\nStudents are finishing their work and coming up to earn \"free choice\" where they use the pens, bags, slime, holographic paper to have fun with friends. It is a great way to end the year in \"community\" and having fun for all the hard work we achieved. Even our reading group did a holograph picture of what we were reading one day, it was fun to see each persons creative ideas. \r\n\r\nthanks again, for all of the support.
