We did an unboxing as a class and the students were so excited! I've slowly been reading them and putting them on display in our book corner for students to read during rotation time. I find if I read a book first students will gravitate towards it the first chance they get. \r\n\r\nWe recently read We are Starlings as we are seeing them more and more this time of year in Virginia. My class was fascinated by the explanations of murmuration especially as they could relate it to what they've been seeing in their own neighborhood. For Indigenous Peoples day we read Aloha Everything as well as discussed pictured and excerpts from the book Indigenous Ingenuity. The discussions and the insights that took place were so well thought out. My favorite part of teaching is when students facilitate quite a bit of it themselves with their inquisitive nature. \r\n\r\nLast but not least we are currently reading a poem a day from A Whale of a Time. We've used it to have great discussions about what words mean and symbolism at a elementary level. \r\n\r\nI can't wait to read the rest of our books in class and see learning and connections being made. \r\n\r\nThank you so much for your generous donations and the beautiful books to add to our class.","fullyFundedDate":1519226667679,"projectUrl":"project/making-reading-come-to-life/2959246/","projectTitle":"Making Reading Come to Life","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Coaty","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3201721_orig.jpg?crop=173,173,x0,y12&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1737580155895","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3201721"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_34652","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":599,"numTeachers":39,"percentFrplEligible":58,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":24,"percentWhite":48,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":10,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"15.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":66.2,"schoolId":34652,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Yorktown Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Yorktown Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/virginia/york-county-school-division/yorktown-math-science-tech-elementary-school/34652"}
