One of the autistic students who will be using the room helped me open all the materials and organize everything. This particular student really inspired me to create a space like this for our students, and his mom was instrumental in rallying the community to financially support the project. He is a member of the National Honor Society, so he was able to earn service points by helping with the project. While opening the boxes and testing out the items, he said it was like a special holiday. He was especially impressed by the bubble tube, which he helped to assemble. \r\n\r\nWhile we were setting everything up, many educators stopped in to see what was going on. Everyone is very impressed with how peaceful and interesting it looks, and they are excited to have this space for our students who need a place to decompress and get back into the learning zone. I have introduced this space to several students, and they too are excited to have a space like this to help them get self-regulated and calm. Having this dedicated location is already helping them feel more comfortable. \r\n\r\nWhile working on this project, I have gotten better acquainted with the parents in my community who have children with special needs. My impression is that they are grateful to be recognized and supported by our community. I am so thankful to have been able to bring this project to life for them and their children.
