I serve fourth and fifth grade students who have previously failed the Reading SOL and are currently reading closer to a first grade instructional level. Many of my students struggle with stamina, confidence, and comprehension, and they require high-interest, highly visual texts to stay engaged.\r\n\r\nThe books purchased through this project - graphic novels, boxed sets, and popular high-interest series - have made an immediate and meaningful impact. These texts provide the pictures, humor, and relatable characters my students need to access grade-level content in a way that feels achievable rather than overwhelming. For students who have experienced repeated reading failure, these books removed the fear and replaced it with excitement.\r\n\r\nA key component of this project's success is student voice. I allowed students to help select the titles before submitting the request, ensuring the books reflected their interests. Because of this, students immediately recognized \"their\" books when they arrived. They eagerly picked them up, reread favorites, shared recommendations with peers, and began to see themselves as readers. Several students who previously avoided independent reading time now ask for extra time to read.\r\n\r\nThese books are now used daily during small-group instruction, independent reading, and reading intervention blocks. Students are demonstrating increased reading stamina, improved fluency, and greater motivation to engage with text. Most importantly, they are developing confidence and a positive reading identity—an essential step toward long-term reading success and improved SOL performance.\r\n\r\nThis project did more than purchase books; it helped shift mindsets. My students are no longer just struggling readers - they are becoming reading rock stars.","fullyFundedDate":1762244720937,"projectUrl":"project/turning-reluctant-readers-in-reading-roc/9850894/","projectTitle":"Turning Reluctant Readers in Reading Rockstars!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Florence","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9727205_orig.png?crop=346,346,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1725389818298","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/faith-florence"},{"teacherId":6915398,"projectId":9796698,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for funding my project and providing these visual schedule materials and interactive reading books!
