Many of my students are still building their confidence with academic English, so it is important that they have books that motivate them to keep reading even when the vocabulary, sentence structure, or literary concepts become challenging. Legendborn offers action, mystery, fantasy, relationships, and complex characters that can keep students invested while they strengthen their reading skills.\r\nUsing this novel in our classroom would allow my students to practice vocabulary development, comprehension, inference, characterization, theme, and textual analysis through a story they can genuinely become interested in. It would also create opportunities for meaningful discussions about identity, family, grief, history, belonging, and finding your place in the world. Most importantly, having enough copies for my students would allow us to experience the novel together as a classroom community. The snacks may seem like a small thing, but they can make a huge difference for high school students. A student who is hungry has a much harder time concentrating, reading, writing, or participating in class. School started this week on August 24th and to date, we have successfully held our first Wellness Wednesday event for students. Our next event is September 9th. \r\nStudents were so grateful for a space to relax, unwind, and connect with each other. \r\nOur hands-on activities will continue monthly and include games (to build social connection), painting and Perler bead crafts (to build self exploration and self expression), DIY stress balls and calming jars (to explore coping skills), and DIY sugar scrubs and rock painting (to support self care and kindness to both ourselves and others). Alongside these activities, students will have meaningful discussions and self reflection around personal values, core beliefs, and their effects on relationships, as well as breathwork and managing dysregulation, feelings identification, social skills, and recognizing healthy vs. unhealthy stress. Our Wellness Wednesday initiative for students hopes to grow in partnership with the existing LiveWell club, which also prioritizes the 8 dimensions of wellness (physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, vocational, financial, and environmental).\r\nAt our mental health awareness tabling event in May 2026, the affirmation bracelets were such a hit and spread around the building like wildfire. I believe the students really appreciated the fun colors and positive affirmations they could wear daily and remind themselves of visually. We heard messages from students such as, \"This is awesome!\", \"Thank you for doing this!,\" and \"We need more of this- I love this!!\". \r\nWe hope to bring this back even bigger and better for May 2027.\r\nNone of this could be done without your generosity. My students were excited when they first saw the snacks and supplies because it showed them that their well-being and success matter. Having access to snacks during class has helped students who may come to school without breakfast or who become hungry throughout the day stay focused and engaged during instruction. It has been rewarding to see students grab a quick snack, settle in, and be ready to participate rather than allowing hunger to become a distraction from learning.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, I plan to continue incorporating the resources into our daily classroom environment, especially during longer lessons, assessments, and activities that require sustained focus. My students will continue working toward their academic goals while learning that taking care of their basic needs is an important part of being successful in the classroom. The next step is to continue building a classroom culture where students feel supported, prepared, and motivated to do their best.
