This particular science curriculum standard can seem very abstract to students without the opportunity for hands on learning. In my classroom, actually experiencing the transformations of types of energies was invaluable. The experience gave my students the opportunity to engage with vocabulary, collaborative conversations, and problem solving. \r\n\r\nThere was unmatched excitement that filled my classroom when I introduced the materials. Of course, students had lots of questions about the kits, and I introduced the concept of \"productive struggle.\" Students had to work with what they knew about following directions for building, like with a Lego set, and what they knew from their earlier unit of force and motion. There were many times when they wanted me to do things for them or give direct guidance while they were building.
