We have utilized the basketball hoop nearly everyday. We have noticed each of students benefit in different ways from having this in our classroom. One student has taken so much interest her parents are signing her up for recreation basketball. Another, who only ever wants to paly with puzzles, has branched out to this activity. For all of the students it is encouraging peer interactions, teamwork, and an attitude of being able to accomplish something. \r\n\r\nHaving an indoor/outdoor play option is also wonderful for those days when indoor recess is required. The basketball hoop is just the right size for our classroom and we have enough space to utilize it for games and even learning activities such as math. The author Mo Willems is our favorite and being able to have the complete set of the hardback Piggie and Gerald books is just a dream come true for kindergarten! These books are awesome because the text is simple and predictable so the kids can help read it, but it is amusing and can be made readily into writing prompts and extended retellings. \r\nIn my classroom, the story time routine of carpet is magical. It is engaging, exciting, and opens doors of possibilities for students that have never had that love of reading and being read to before! Kids are hanging on to each page, ready for what will happen next. All of my learners are loving our new texts, but the students that have never been to school before (no pre-kindergarten experience) are really like little sponges. It has been so much fun and such a good learning experience and it is just our first week with it! We used the first set up as a farm unit. Students had farm animals to explore, crops to sort, the beads to spell farm, and tongs to use for fine motor building. \r\n\r\nThe students could not WAIT for their turn to explore the Tuff Tray! They were so excited and engaged in the activity and wanted to immediately know when it would be their turn again. \r\n\r\nI am planning many different themes/activities for our STEM use of the Tuff Tray in the coming weeks: sorting colors in the rainbow pom pom center, making patterns using autumn pattern pieces, alphabet find and sort using colored sand for the sea shore set. The possibilities are endless. The best part is though they are learning, they are also playing and having fun. What an amazing resource for our classroom! The giant ABC beads have made letter sequencing and spelling a fun and fashionable center. The mini magnadoodles have been a life saver as fine motor practice is so essential. They make it possible to practice letters and short sight words without paper and pencil; thus making it more engaging for all students. \r\nMy boy students really enjoy the ABC race car track. They build the track sequencing the letters and then 'drive' around the track making the sounds to match each letter. \r\nThe students are so excited with our new materials because they know that it is fun and they get to work with partners. The new materials keep them wanting to learn and try new things in the classroom! \r\nI am excited to see my students this year experiment with the ice cream count and sort game. And the ABC sorting box has made letter and sound match fun and easy! \r\nWhen the students get to use our materials in the classroom in whole and small groups, they are just so excited. They know they are learning but it is fun and easy to get them motivated and its them that doesn't want to stop! As the students get better at both sounds and number identification, I can make the games more challenging and add items and higher numbers to the mix. \r\nThe best projects are those that grow with the students' abilities.
