All students in the class receive special education support and have significant learning challenges. This year, I came up with the idea of having students plan and implement a school store. The students began this journey by designing their own school store, which entailed deciding what items to sell, setting their budget, and how to advertise. Together, as a group, they created a proposal to present to our building administration to request permission to open and operate the store. \r\n\tOur store, named the Group Store, has been up and running for the last few months and has been quite the success! All of the items donated, including snacks, pencils, and fidgets, have been a huge hit. The students take turns selling on Wednesdays and Thursdays. In addition, they track total profit and inventory, which items remain, and which items need to be purchased. Students are learning the skills of identifying bills and coins, making change, budgeting, adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers, and communicating with their customers. While students can practice many of these skills through worksheets and games in class, they gain much more knowledge and experience by running their store.\r\n\tI sincerely thank you for the donated items! You have made a huge difference in my students' lives and education.","fullyFundedDate":1769997510540,"projectUrl":"project/learning-basic-math-skills-by-creating-a/9912482/","projectTitle":"Learning Basic Math Skills by Creating a Classroom Store","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Severance","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp1410809_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1546543955238","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1410809"},{"teacherId":1410809,"projectId":9406604,"letterContent":"The new resources have made a significant impact in our classroom! We've incorporated them into our weekly learning sessions, and they've become a central part of our current unit. Specific projects we're working on is a game based financial exploration where students are using the new games and kits to investigate all of the facets of financial health and well being.\r\nTheir excitement was unforgettable! When we unboxed the materials, there were gasps and claps all around. Many students couldn't believe the items were \"just for us!\" One student said, \"This feels like Christmas!!\" It was such a joyful and proud moment.They were so happy that we could learn financial and money management through games. \r\nRight now, we're preparing for a financial project where they'll choose a profession; they will be assigned a salary; they can choose housing, utilities, car. . . Then they will be given \"wrenches\" in their budgets, like a broken water pipe. They will then have to share their progress with the class. These activities will help them to develop both academic and financial knowledge and collaborating with others which will benefit them far beyond this unit.","fullyFundedDate":1755521946419,"projectUrl":"project/learning-about-finances-through-games/9406604/","projectTitle":"Learning About Finances Through Games!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Severance","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp1410809_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1546543955238","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1410809"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_41121","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":380,"numTeachers":33,"percentFrplEligible":54,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":95,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":1,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"7 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"11.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":43.8,"schoolId":41121,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Mill River Union High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Mill River Union High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/vermont/mill-river-unified-union-school-district/mill-river-union-high-school/41121"}
