These books will be especially helpful in teaching our struggling older readers. They contain stories that are geared to the interests of upper elementary school children, with illustrations that appeal to older children. The characters are more relatable to them, since they are the same age as these readers. Because of this, these books capture the attention of students in grades 3-6, but they are written with special attention to phonics patterns and sight words that these students already know. Often, intervention groups spend time practicing skills by reading books with controlled vocabulary (words that fit only the phonics patterns they have already learned well). Sometimes these stories are not very interesting, especially to older students. However, with the arrival of the books funded by this project, my students are excited about the stories we are reading. They come to my group anxious to find out what happens next in the series. All the while, they are still getting the phonics practice they need to help them progress. \r\n I thank you for your donations to this project! Because of your generous gift, my students were able to learn using tools that draw on many senses. This sort of learning is more \"sticky\" than others because the students must use both their sense of sight and their sense of touch (along with hearing and speaking at times, as well), activating the brain in multiple ways. For example, during one of my small group times, when the students were choosing the correct magnetic letter, \"b\" or \"d\", they told me that they could feel the difference to the touch. That is a sense they would not have been able to use by simply reading the letter. \r\n\r\nMy students have enjoyed using the hands-on materials such as the pop-it blocks, dry erase markers, magnetic doodle boards, gel boards, and the other materials we received.
