Some gravitate toward sensory tools, some prefer a quiet activity, and others just need a calm place to sit for a few minutes before they are ready to rejoin their class. When students first saw the new materials, they were excited to explore everything and immediately started talking about which items they wanted to try first.\r\n\r\nThe Zen Den has also given us more opportunities to teach self-regulation in the moment. Rather than simply telling students to calm down, we can help them identify what they are feeling, choose a strategy, and practice getting themselves back to a place where they can be successful.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue helping students become more independent in recognizing when they need support and choosing the strategies that work best for them. Students are using the new resources throughout the school day to take a break, engage in calming or creative activities, and practice strategies that help them return to class ready to learn.\r\n\r\nOne of the best moments has been seeing students begin to recognize for themselves when they need a reset. Instead of waiting until they are completely frustrated or dysregulated, we are starting to hear students ask to use the space, choose something that works for them, and then return to their classroom. That kind of self-awareness is a huge skill for many of our students.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, the students were excited and curious about everything that had been added. They immediately wanted to explore the different options and figure out what they liked best. It has also helped the space feel intentional and welcoming rather than simply being a place students are sent when they are struggling.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue teaching students how to use these resources independently and, more importantly, how to identify which regulation strategies work best for them. The goal is for the skills they practice in this space to eventually carry over into the classroom, at home, and into other difficult situations.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping us create something that gives our students another way to be successful.
