We have a very diverse demographic of students who attend here. There are over 600 refugees, 60 languages spoken and people from every continent of the world who claim West as their school. Many of these students do not know about the education system in the U.S. and your donations have given support to educating our students about their options. \r\n\r\nThe students have benefitted from your donations as they have stoped at the booths we have at our sporting events. We have been able to discuss options and show them virtual campus tours on the iPad. We have also been able to give them rewards for applying to the FAFSA, colleges, writing college essays etc.\r\n\r\nOne of our students, a refugee, who has been moved out of their home country to three different countries, has successfully applied to multiple colleges and scholarships. He is very hopeful for acceptance. Your donations gave me options in teaching and presenting information with the iPad and giving rewards with the cookies and chips as they accomplished different goals. This is just one example of many who I have been working with and who are onto greater hope and success in their future. \r\n\r\nIt is privilege to work with these students and witness their minds open to the new idea of secondary education through trade schools, colleges and universities. This space we created has provided a welcoming, safe, and comfortable place for students to unload and feel seen. It offers warmth from the moment they come in. It has also been a calming place for me, which helps me be in the right state to provide the needed support to students.\r\n\r\nMany significant conversations have taken place here. Students discussing serious things that have occurred to them or that they may be dealing with including abuse, loss, and thoughts of self-harm. I don't want to be insensitive, but I include this for you to know the importance of having a place like this and the depth of your impact. Thank you for helping me create a space that helps facilitate such conversations.\r\n\r\nOn one occasion a student was suffering from a panic attack. They felt overwhelmed in other areas of the school but were able to come in and regulate their nervous system. \r\n\r\nThe couch has offered a comfortable place for people of all sizes to sit with ease. The soft lighting has been soothing unlike the fluorescent overhead lights. The sound machine helps prevent conversations from being overheard in order to maintain privacy.\r\n\r\nThe table has been a convenient place to set fidget toys and a tissue box near students. I can't tell you how much those fidget toys get used and how helpful it is for students to have them within reach. \r\n\r\nWhen students have experienced heavy emotions during a session, the mirror has allowed them to review their appearance before they exit to carry on with their day. This reduces feelings of self-consciousness, which is no small thing for teenagers. Most care a great deal about their appearance and worry about how they are perceived by peers.\r\n\r\nSchool faculty have commented on how the space looks like a real therapy office. When they walk in for the first time, they look around in amazement and offer positive feedback.\r\n\r\nOther students in the school have walked by and commented on how nice it is and how they want to spend time there. This has brought up the question of, \"What is that room?\" Which provides the opportunity to inform those students of the mental health resources available to them on campus. \r\n\r\nIt quickly became clear this is not the type of space faculty or students are used to seeing or expect in a public high school. Someone commented on how the space reflects the dignity and worth we want students to feel. It truly is a special place.
