As a Chinese Dual Immersion school, our classes are connected to the Chinese language and culture program, so I wanted to create a reading reward system that connected with what my students are learning.\r\nEach month, students have the opportunity to earn a 3D-printed animal from the Chinese zodiac by completing their reading calendar. I have created a calendar that shows them which animal they will earn each month, giving them something fun and motivating to look forward to. Our first animal was the Snake, and at the end of September, students will have the opportunity to earn a Dog.\r\n\r\nThe response has already been incredible! 17 out of 20 students in my morning class returned their reading calendars, and 18 out of 21 students in my afternoon class returned theirs. That means 35 out of 41 students—85% of my students—completed and returned their calendars! It has been so exciting to see how motivated they are to practice reading at home.\r\nBut the reading calendar is just one part of our reading reward system.\r\nStudents can also earn rewards for passing off books from our at-home reader program. When students bring their books back to school, they read them to a reading volunteer and demonstrate that they can read the book fluently. Once they successfully pass off their book, they earn a 3D-printed Chinese coin that they can put into our classroom gumball machine.\r\n\r\nInstead of receiving candy, students get to choose a capsule containing a fun 3D-printed reward. This has been a wonderful way to make reading exciting while keeping the rewards educational and connected to our classroom. Parents love that their children are being rewarded for reading without receiving candy or other sugary treats at school.\r\n\r\nI actually started this reward system last year after one of my wonderful teacher friends introduced me to the magic of 3D printing. She printed some of the rewards for my students, and I quickly saw how excited the children became about earning them. I decided that I needed to get a 3D printer of my own so I could continue creating meaningful rewards for my students.\r\nSince then, I have learned so much and improved the system in many ways. But the most rewarding part has been seeing the growth in my students as readers.\r\n\r\nLast year, I watched many of my students become confident, fluent readers who were well prepared to enter second grade. Their progress was amazing. In fact, the second-grade teachers were so happy with how many of my students arrived already reading confidently and fluently.\r\nThat is why this program means so much to me.
