Because of your generosity, my students were able to experience this incredible novel together, and it has been such a meaningful part of our reading instruction. Having their own copies allowed students to follow along, revisit important events, and find evidence to support their thinking. It has been wonderful watching them become invested in Brian's journey and seeing their excitement as they discovered how he would overcome each new challenge.\r\n\r\nThroughout our novel study, students practiced important fifth-grade reading skills, including analyzing character traits, identifying conflicts, understanding plot and setting, recognizing figurative language, and making inferences using text evidence. We also had meaningful classroom discussions about Brian's decisions, his struggles, and how he changed throughout the story. After finishing the novel, students worked together to create character projects that required them to think more deeply about Brian's strengths, weaknesses, values, accomplishments, and personal growth. These projects gave students an opportunity to apply what they learned while collaborating and being creative.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite parts of this experience has been watching my students grow as readers and thinkers. Hatchet challenged them to look beyond what was happening in the story and explain why those events mattered. Your generosity made this learning experience possible, and I am so grateful that my students had the opportunity to enjoy this novel together.
