As a teacher, I am always searching for ways to bridge the gap between \"having to read\" and \"wanting to read,\" and your generosity has provided the perfect toolkit.\r\n\r\nYou might see these items as just entertainment, but they are critical teaching tools that are already introducing several essential skills to our diverse learners. These graphic novels are invaluable for building complex visual literacy; students must decode character expressions, body language, and panel composition in tandem with the text to understand the story's nuanced humor. This is especially helpful to our English Language Learners. They provide a massive boost to reading stamina for struggling readers, who feel an immense sense of accomplishment in finishing their first 200+ page book. Furthermore, we are using the plush characters to build social-emotional learning by acting out conflict scenarios from the plot, and the cooperative lenticular puzzle is used during our center time to teach valuable lessons in collaboration, critical thinking, and fine motor skills.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading will been transformed into an immersive experience. Students are no longer just quietly sitting at their desks; reading time will now involves pairs of students sharing a book, laughing together at Dav Pilkey's jokes. It looks like imaginative play, where students use the plushies to retell their favorite chapters. For one particular group of my students—who are usually \"allergic\" to opening a book—this project will be life-changing. I know that my students will have help finding their \"doorway\" book, with this new selection. This project will truly give my students access to reading on their own terms.\r\nAs you can see, my library is brand new and in the process of being, entered into my system, labeled, protected and organized for use on day 1. I wish I could include student photos, but unfortunately we have not begun school yet. I am hoping to be able to continue to add onto my library during this back to school season.
