Last year I checked out a set of books from the library and found that my students paid attention so much better when they had their own book in their hand. They took more ownership in what we were reading. Well, our school library only has a couple of class sets of books. This year I moved up to 4th grade with this same group of kids. I knew I wanted to start the year with a great class read along that was mature and would fit with my new 4th graders. We started Wonder the second week of school. We read it everyday after recess. As we started reading it, I would stop it and we talked about the different characters. We talked about how we thought Auggie was feeling starting school for the first time knowing kids were going to look at him. My kids learned empathy and what it meant to be a friend to all. It upset them when kids treated Auggie bad. We talked about if we thought there were more mean people in the world or more kind people. It is sad but the thought was there were more mean people. That made me sad but hopefullly as they continue to grow they will see that the world is filled with more kindness.
