I did not show students everything at once, but a few pieces at a time. The first supply I showed them were the clear baskets. They were so excited, even for clear baskets, they were saying \"wow\" and \"that's so cool\"! I showed them how the baskets include the books with fewer words in the non-fiction section, making them easier for our younger students to find. When they look in the non-fiction section, they know to go to the baskets first to see if there are books of interest for them there. In the fiction section, the clear baskets house the books that don't get checked out often, making them more visible. Guess what? The books are getting checked out more now, and students are finding new series they like!! That was exactly what I was hoping for. It just needed to be more visible. \r\n\r\nThe colored baskets are in our everybody section which is largely coded not only by author's last name, but by season and holiday. Students are always asking where a certain Halloween book or Christmas book is because the stickers on the spine are not large. Now, the books are housed together, and a student actually created the signs for the baskets. \r\n\r\nI have gotten several compliments on the hot air balloons, saying they create a welcoming atmosphere. Here's a few examples: \r\n-After reading the Bluebonnet nominee book called Pedro's Yo-Yos, third and fourth grade students got to try using yo-yos. Now, they are part of the Brain Break activities they can choose from after checking out books. \r\n-Kinder students got to create their own Texas flag on a pole model during their Social Studies unit on the Texas pledge and flag using popsicle sticks and modeling clay. \r\n-First and second grade students created a 'creature catcher' (also called a spider web) after reading the book called Frank, The Seven Legged Spider, using popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, yarn, straws, and masking tape. \r\n-The masking tape is used for many library activities, ranging from hanging things up for activities that go along with a read aloud or having students connect paper chains in team building projects. \r\n\r\nThere are many more projects and STEM students will work on during the rest of the semester, such as making shadows with the flashlight and circuits with the circuit kits.
