When the ukuleles arrived, they brought so much excitement to our classroom. For many of my students, this was their first opportunity to learn to play a string instrument, and they couldn't wait to get started. Seeing their faces light up as they held their own ukulele reminded me that sometimes the smallest instruments can make the biggest difference!\r\n\r\nNow, we are learning how to hold the ukuleles, strum the strings, keep a steady beat, and play our songs. Students are discovering that making music takes practice, patience, and teamwork. There is something special about watching them encourage one another, celebrate small victories, and realize they can make music themselves!\r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, my students have new opportunities to explore music, build confidence, and experience the joy of creating something together. Our next step is to keep building our skills so we can record songs for their parents. It creates an inviting area that encourages interaction, hands-on learning, and meaningful experiences. Students bounced and clapped in excitement, and kept asking if the instruments were for them. After practicing how to hold and ring the bells safely, we began using them to explore steady beat and listening skills. Even my quieter students were excited to try out the new instruments.\r\n\r\nWe are using the bell cards to build early music literacy and color recognition while reinforcing turn-taking and teamwork. The students have to watch closely, listen carefully, and wait for their turn—big skills for little learners!\r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, our preschoolers are not just making music—they are building listening skills, self-control, and the courage to participate while having great fun. At first, they were surprised to know that we could use play-doh to learn about music. Now, they frequently ask for the play-doh station.\r\n\r\nThe play-doh has encouraged my special needs students to become more outgoing and vocal in class. They use dough cutters in the shape of music symbols to create tangible examples of what the other students are drawing on the board. All of the students are now more likely to work alongside each other as one class, instead of two separate classes that have been integrated for a 55-minute music class. \r\n\r\nWe will continue to use the play-doh to create rhythmic patterns. Soon, we are going to add yarn to create a music staff on the floor. The students will add their play-doh rhythms to the staff as we begin to learn to read music. \r\n\r\nAgain, thank you for your generosity and kindness. My students absolutely love using play-doh to learn about music.","fullyFundedDate":1757423981963,"projectUrl":"project/adaptable-needs-for-elementary-music-cla/9478468/","projectTitle":"Adaptable Needs for Elementary Music Class","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Toepoel","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10069735"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_15144","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":510,"numTeachers":54,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":5,"percentBlack":10,"percentWhite":4,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":77,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":1,"gradesServed":"Pre-K - 4","studentTeacherRatio":"9.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":55.0,"schoolId":15144,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Genoa Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Genoa Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/pasadena-independent-school-district/genoa-elementary-school/15144"}
