Because they had enough books and enough time (6 months), our students won 2nd place in a District wide competition! We have 30 elementary schools in our district, so this was a huge feat!\r\n\r\nIt is only through donors like you that my students were able to access the books in the way they did. We were able to talk about how to study a text and how different it is from reading just for fun. We explored characterization, determining important plot elements and turning points, author intention, back matter, etc. These skills were invaluable in preparing for the competition, but will also stay with them as they move into the upper grades and are asked to do more complex literary analysis.\r\n\r\nBecause the books were varied and diverse, all students were able to find a piece they identified with and characters to connect to. Just as importantly, it opened them up to worlds and situations they knew nothing about which sparked conversations and research outside of our team study times. Students were also exposed to new authors which led them to seek out other books they authors had written or to follow them in hopes of finding more books in the future.\r\n\r\nThank you for placing education our youth as a priority.","fullyFundedDate":1690561170454,"projectUrl":"project/book-battle-read-study-win/7243530/","projectTitle":"Book Battle: Read, Study, Win!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Zavala","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4861151_orig.jpg?crop=2208,2208,x0,y412&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1742930000397","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4861151"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_8984","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":550,"numTeachers":36,"percentFrplEligible":53,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":8,"percentWhite":44,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":39,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"15.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":89.3,"schoolId":8984,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Foster Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Foster Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/humble-independent-school-district/foster-elementary-school/8984"}
