Your generosity gave my students the opportunity to engage with a challenging and thought-provoking novel that led to some of our most meaningful discussions so far this year.\r\n\r\nThroughout the unit, students read the novel together in class and recorded their observations, questions, and analysis in their binders. As we worked through the novel, students examined difficult topics such as violence, racism, morality, human nature, power, and the consequences of unchecked brutality.\r\n\r\nOur classroom discussions were especially valuable. Rather than simply focusing on what happened in the novel, students were challenged to consider why McCarthy presents violence and humanity the way he does and what larger ideas the novel asks readers to confront. Students often brought different interpretations to the same passages, which gave them opportunities to defend their ideas with textual evidence and respond thoughtfully to the perspectives of their classmates.\r\n\r\nAt the end of the unit, students completed an analytical essay in which they selected a major theme from the novel and developed their own interpretation of how McCarthy explores that theme. The project required them to return to the text, select meaningful evidence, and construct an argument supported by close analysis. We aren't quite done with it, but I was so excited to tell you about it that I just couldn't wait. Before this, we read Frankenstein by Mary Shelley which was pretty difficult for them. The vocabulary and syntax are intense. The story is cyclical and complex. Let's just say they struggled, but it was good.\r\n\r\nThis novel is just as complex and amazing, but it is much easier to understand. You have no idea how much they are appreciating a book that is more accessible. They're eager and excited, which just makes my life so much happier. They love the murder mystery vibe! They keep comparing it to books, tv shows, and movies that they already know. I had to explain to them that many modern writers were inspired by the way Agatha Christie wrote.\r\n\r\nIt's a very common story of strangers all meeting in a remote place, and there's a killer among them. Everyone has a secret, and they keep dropping like flies. I love that I get to show them the origin of this concept, and that it was written by a woman almost 100 years ago.
