These boards have quickly become one of our favorite tools for writing and reading activities. My students use them daily for quick writes, grammar practice, and brainstorming, and they've made lessons so much more interactive and fun.\r\n\r\nWhen the boards first arrived, the excitement was off the charts! Students couldn't wait to try them out—writing, doodling, and sharing ideas right away. One of my favorite moments was during our \"Character Trait Challenge,\" when students proudly held up their boards filled with thoughtful, creative answers. It was such a joy to see every student engaged and confident in their learning.\r\n\r\nRight now, we're using the boards in our narrative writing unit to draft dialogue and revise sentences before transferring final pieces to paper. These boards have truly turned writing into something my students look forward to. I believe that books should not only support academic learning but also spark curiosity, encourage imagination, and foster a love of reading that extends beyond the classroom walls. Establishing a library that is both functional and inviting has allowed me to better support my students as readers and learners.\r\n\r\nFrom the very beginning, my goal was to create a library space that would be easy for students to use independently while also being diverse enough to meet their interests and reading levels. I organized the collection in a way that makes browsing simple, ensuring that books are clearly labeled, neatly displayed, and accessible to all students. This organization has made a noticeable difference; students can quickly locate a text that matches their mood, curiosity, or assignment needs without feeling overwhelmed by choice.\r\n\r\nOne of the greatest successes of this effort has been seeing how frequently students interact with the books. The classroom library has become a regular part of our daily routines. Whether students are waiting for dismissal, transitioning between lessons, or preparing for our scheduled visits to the school library, they always have the option to engage with the books I have provided. This consistent access means that students are not only practicing reading more often but also associating reading with enjoyment and relaxation rather than as a task that is only tied to grades or assignments.\r\n\r\nIt has been particularly encouraging to watch students discover titles and genres they might not have otherwise explored. Some gravitate toward graphic novels, while others prefer realistic fiction, informational texts, or fantasy adventures. By offering a variety of genres, I am able to meet students' unique interests and broaden their exposure to different types of literature. This variety helps cultivate an inclusive reading culture where every child can find something that resonates with them.\r\n\r\nAlthough I am proud of the progress made so far, I also recognize that building a truly robust classroom library is an ongoing process. There is always room to add more diverse voices, more high-interest texts, and more books that reflect both my students' lives and the wider world. My next steps include expanding the collection to include additional culturally responsive literature, updating texts to align with current student interests, and continuing to refine the organization so students remain engaged and empowered in their book choices.\r\n\r\nOverall, establishing and maintaining a classroom library has been a rewarding journey. It has provided my students with daily opportunities to read for enjoyment, to strengthen their literacy skills, and to build positive associations with books. While there is still work to be done, this experience has been an amazing beginning, one that reinforces my belief in the power of access, choice, and organization in shaping lifelong readers.","fullyFundedDate":1748313266012,"projectUrl":"project/rhones-readers/9380309/","projectTitle":"Rhone's Readers","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Rhone","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9766343_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1748374701549","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9766343"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_14853","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1208,"numTeachers":68,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":9,"percentWhite":55,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":23,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 4","studentTeacherRatio":"17.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":73.0,"schoolId":14853,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Gilmer Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Gilmer Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/gilmer-independent-school-district/gilmer-elementary-school/14853"}
