This year, we introduced read-aloud time in our 5th grade science classroom with one simple goal: to help students discover the joy of reading. Many of my students have limited experience with chapter books, so I wanted to introduce them to wonderful stories that would spark their curiosity and imagination. Our read-aloud time has quickly become something students look forward to. They listen, laugh, make predictions, ask questions, and eagerly discuss what might happen next.\r\n\r\nThrough these stories, students are naturally building listening comprehension, vocabulary, critical thinking, and the ability to make connections and understand different perspectives. One of my favorite moments was watching students' surprised reactions to an unexpected twist in a story and hearing them excitedly discuss it afterward. These are the moments that remind me how powerful reading can be, especially for children who may not yet see themselves as readers.\r\n\r\nThanks to United to Learn, we are receiving a wonderful collection of new books that will allow us to continue this experience throughout the school year. My hope is that these stories will inspire students not only to enjoy listening to books but eventually to pick up books on their own. Your generosity is helping me create a classroom where reading is something students look forward to, not just something they are required to do. Thank you for giving my students the opportunity to discover the magic of a good book!","fullyFundedDate":1793035195388,"projectUrl":"project/one-read-aloud-away-from-falling-in-love/10759931/","projectTitle":"One Read-Aloud Away from Falling in Love with Books","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Yakovuk","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5479513_orig.jpg?crop=272,272,x348,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1563928952558","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5479513"},{"teacherId":10141979,"projectId":9546503,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for the drums and the drum stand for my classroom. The students were shocked to see them when they arrived and we immediately started using them. The drums are being used with my 5th and 6th graders and learning drum rudiments in class and reading notes as well. Now that we have a total of 5 drums, more kids can practice together, work on tempo (fast or slow) and dynamics (volume) while playing with their classmates. \r\n\r\nNot only do we use the drums for reading music, but I also utilize them with the drum line as well. Students are playing drum cadences almost on a high school level with the snare drums. We will now be able to use the drums when we travel to perform at other schools, Dallas ISD after school events, and drum competitions. \r\n\r\nThank you so much for your donations, the students here at Arcadia Park will benefit well with the new drums.","fullyFundedDate":1760693822170,"projectUrl":"project/snare-drum-and-rudiments/9546503/","projectTitle":"Snare Drum and Rudiments","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Jones","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10141979"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_18078","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":546,"numTeachers":39,"percentFrplEligible":92,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":5,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":91,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":0,"gradesServed":"Pre-K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"14.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":88.1,"schoolId":18078,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Arcadia Park Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Arcadia Park Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/dallas-independent-school-district/arcadia-park-elementary-school/18078"}
