Because of you, my students are no longer working around tired, worn-out, or missing tools. Instead, they're stepping into a space that feels real, functional, and full of possibility—and that shift has made a bigger impact than I can fully put into words.\r\n\r\nWe are using these new tools constantly, and they've completely transformed how we work. One of the most powerful moments came during a recent lab when students were preparing fresh vegetables and sauces from scratch. With sharp, reliable chef knives, they were able to move efficiently and safely, which meant we had more time to focus on building flavor, adjusting seasoning, and refining technique. Instead of frustration, there was focus—and even excitement—as they realized how much easier and more enjoyable the work could be with the right tools.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the new equipment, their reactions said everything. There was a mix of surprise, excitement, and honestly, a little disbelief. Several of them immediately picked up the knives and commented on how different they felt—balanced, sharp, and \"like real chef knives.\" It set a new tone right away. They understood that this space, and their work in it, mattered.\r\n\r\nThe impact has carried into their larger projects as well. For their final assignment, students are creating their own original recipes, and for the first time, they're able to fully bring those ideas to life without limitations from worn-out or missing equipment. They're experimenting more, taking risks, and producing food that is more thoughtful, flavorful, and intentional. Our next steps are focused on refining those dishes—testing, adjusting, and presenting them with purpose. They're not just cooking anymore; they're creating.\r\n\r\nI also want to personally thank Carrie and Marilyn. Your support truly made a difference in this classroom. What you gave wasn't just equipment—it was opportunity, confidence, and a better experience for every student who walks into this kitchen.\r\n\r\nFrom the bottom of my heart, thank you for believing in my students and investing in what we're building here. You've helped create an environment where they can succeed, take pride in their work, and discover what they're capable of—and that's something that will stay with them long after they leave this classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1767660483967,"projectUrl":"project/sharpening-skills-upgrading-our-culinar/9873078/","projectTitle":"Sharpening Skills: Upgrading Our Culinary Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. James-Merit","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9441943_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1725466000022","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9441943"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_101454","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":72,"numTeachers":15,"percentFrplEligible":78,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":71,"percentWhite":3,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":22,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"US Census Data for the surrounding geographic area","gradesServed":"5 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"4.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"Census ZCTA","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":null},"inStateSupporters":81.0,"schoolId":101454,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Academy of Academic Excellence - Youth Village Campus on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Academy of Academic Excellence - Youth Village Campus","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/dallas-county-schools/dallas-co-jj-charter-school-youth-village/101454"}
