This year, students have eagerly discussed women's flag football, modern art, and even the surprising possibilities of cockroach milk! They have enjoyed watching videos about the history of basketball and picking up comics to read independently. These moments remind us that students are more willing to engage with reading when they can choose topics that connect to their interests and the world they know.\r\n\r\nWe want to build on that excitement by giving our juniors regular access to current, high-interest magazines covering sports, science, pop culture, technology, history, and more. Magazines provide short, accessible pieces that allow students to explore a topic without the commitment of an entire novel. They can discover something new, share an interesting fact with a classmate, or find an article that leads to a bigger question. These authentic texts also give students opportunities to practice the same critical reading skills we use with novels, essays, and articles while seeing those skills applied to real-world topics.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, we want our students to experience reading as something they choose to do because they are interested, not simply because it was assigned. These magazines will be shared among all three on-level English III classrooms, giving our juniors many opportunities throughout the year to explore, discuss, question, and enjoy what they read.
