This grant helps remove that barrier and ensures that every child has access to clean, comfortable clothing when they need it, regardless of their family's circumstances. Instead of a child feeling embarrassed or worried about not having a change of clothes, they can receive the support they need and return to learning and playing with their classmates.\r\n\r\nThe impact extends beyond simply meeting a basic need. When children are comfortable, confident, and feel safe at school, they are better able to participate in classroom activities, interact with peers, and focus on learning. The materials provided through this grant have helped transform our outdoor space into an extension of our classroom where students can engage in purposeful, student-centered learning while developing skills that will support them throughout their educational journey.\r\n\r\nOne of the greatest impacts of the grant has been the increased opportunities for sensory exploration and hands-on learning. Materials such as buckets, bowls, utensils, sponges, sifters, scoops, and other loose parts allow students to investigate concepts using their senses and their imaginations. During outdoor center time, students can experiment with water, mud, sand, natural materials, and other open-ended resources. They are able to make predictions, test ideas, observe changes, and discuss what they discover. These experiences naturally encourage scientific thinking and provide authentic opportunities to practice vocabulary and communication skills.\r\n\r\nThe materials also strengthened students' social-emotional development. Outdoor play provides children with opportunities to practice sharing materials, taking turns, communicating their needs, solving disagreements, and working cooperatively with their classmates. Instead of simply being told how to solve a problem, students have real situations in which they must use their problem-solving skills. For example, children may need to decide how to share limited materials, determine how to build something together, or negotiate different ideas during dramatic play. These moments allow me to intentionally model and reinforce positive communication, self-regulation, and conflict-resolution strategies.\r\n\r\nThe outdoor materials have also increased opportunities for physical development. Preschool children need frequent opportunities to move their bodies, build strength, develop coordination, and practice both gross- and fine-motor skills. Outdoor play allows students to run, balance, carry, pour, squeeze, scoop, dig, build, and manipulate materials. Fine-motor materials, such as lacing items, utensils, sponges, and tools, provide additional opportunities for strengthening the small muscles in students' hands and fingers, which are important for future writing, cutting, and classroom tasks.\r\n\r\nAnother significant impact has been the increase in student engagement and independence. Open-ended materials do not have one \"right\" way to be used. Students are encouraged to make choices, develop their own ideas, and take ownership of their play. I have observed that children become highly engaged when they are given the freedom to explore materials and use their creativity. I added to this some playdough and a recipe card to make gingerbread cookies at home. \r\n\r\nThe literacy kits provided families with an opportunity to build lasting memories together while reinforcing foundational academic skills. Students were able to retell the story using the plush character as a prop, strengthening comprehension, sequencing, vocabulary development, and oral language skills. The hands-on materials encouraged children to act out events from the story, fostering creativity and deeper understanding.\r\n\r\nThe inclusion of the rolling pin and cookie cutter added a meaningful family connection. As students baked and created together at home, they were able to practice following directions, measuring, fine motor skills, and conversation—all while reinforcing story elements in a joyful and engaging way. For many of our families, these shared literacy experiences are especially valuable in building confidence and establishing positive routines around reading.\r\n\r\nThis grant not only supported academic growth, but also strengthened home-school connections and created special moments between children and their caregivers. They couldn't wait to touch and explore the pieces, and their excitement grew even more when we worked together to create our very first Mat Man. The laughter, cheering, and eagerness to participate made it clear that these materials would capture their hearts as well as their minds. What began as a fun way to build a little figure quickly evolved into a foundation for learning about how letters are formed and how to draw people.\r\n\r\nNow, the materials have become part of our daily routine. We start by building Mat Man as a group, which gives the students practice with sequencing, body awareness, and collaboration. Then we transition into using the very same pieces to build letters. The children are discovering that letters are not mysterious symbols, but simple combinations of big lines, little lines, big curves, and little curves. This hands-on experience helps them connect the building process to the skills they will later need when holding a pencil and writing on paper.\r\n\r\nOne of the most memorable classroom moments happened during that first week of letter building. After we finished putting together Mat Man, one of my students carefully studied the pieces and exclaimed, \"I can make an E with these!\" With so much pride, she arranged three little lines across a big line to form the letter E, and then proudly announced, \"It's an E, just like in my name!\" Immediately, other children rushed to try building the letters from their own names. The joy and confidence they felt in that moment was priceless — they weren't just playing, they were making real connections to language and literacy.\r\n\r\nAs we continue to use the materials, I can already see how they are supporting my students' fine motor skills, visual memory, and confidence. The next step for us is moving from building letters with the wooden shapes to tracing them on paper and eventually writing them independently.
