When the big boxes of indoor recess toys first arrived, my first graders could hardly contain their excitement. Their eyes lit up with absolute wonder, and the room was instantly filled with cheers and gasps as we unpacked everything from building sets to creative games. For six- and seven-year-olds, rainy days inside can sometimes feel long and restless, but seeing their new \"rainy day treasure chest\" completely transformed indoor recess into the highlight of our week.\r\n\r\nThese new resources have given my students a wonderful outlet for creativity, social connection, and problem-solving. During our very first indoor recess with the new toys, I watched a group of students who don't normally play together gather on the rug to build a massive \"castle\" out of the new building blocks. They spent thirty minutes communicating, sharing pieces, and giggling as they worked together to make it higher and higher. It is so rewarding to see them building friendships, practicing turn-taking, and exercising their imaginations—all while having a blast out of the rain!\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we are using these play experiences to support our classroom learning goals. We are currently working on SEL (Social-Emotional Learning) units focused on teamwork, sharing, and expressing feelings, and these recess toys provide the perfect real-world opportunity for students to put those skills into practice every day. Your kindness has not only brightened our rainy days but has also helped build a warm, cooperative classroom community.
