What started as a \"safe space where they can take a breath, process their feelings, and simply be,\" has become one of the \"go-to\" spots in the room. The moment I laid out the carpet, the bean bag chair, and the different sensory toys, it became an instant hit with my scholars. They love \"going to the carpet\". That's what they call it. It's their favorite thing to do throughout the day. \r\n\r\nIt's such a hit that it has become a spot for them to connect with their classmates one-on-one. They are often asking me, \"Can me and (insert student name) go to the carpet?\". It just makes me so happy when they want to do things together. It's such a hit that now, at the beginning of the day, after they've had their breakfast, and towards the end of the day, when we're getting ready for dismissal, I let them take turns having 5 minutes on the carpet in groups, which they love. I've had scholars come out who were tired from lack of sleep, and a bean bag chair is there for them to take a quick nap (one student slept for an hour, which he needed, and he was well-rested for the rest of the day). \r\n\r\nI've been thinking a lot about why the calm corner is so popular. I believe in part because of the location. (It's right next to my teacher table, which they love sitting at with me, so I've had to add more chairs.) But I genuinely believe it gives them the chance to \"play,\" which isn't always part of their daily lives. Yes, we do 40 minutes of recess, but there is something about the act of play in a classroom with toys and manipulatives that really jives with my class. I am very grateful to be able to create this space for them, and I couldn't have done that without your support. Thank you, thank you.","fullyFundedDate":1756610476955,"projectUrl":"project/mr-ws-calm-corner/9647466/","projectTitle":"Mr. W's Calm Corner","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Webster","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10221678_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1756063053369","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10221678"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_108006","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":388,"numTeachers":13,"percentFrplEligible":56,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":95,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":3,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"29.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":37.1,"schoolId":108006,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Promise Academy - Spring Hill on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Promise Academy - Spring Hill","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/tennessee/memphis-shelby-county-schools/promise-academy-spring-hill/108006"}
